Gate City is currently working on many different areas to improve the quality of life for residents, revitalize the downtown area, and to attract new business. The Economic Development and Revitalization Committee is tasked with spearheading the plan outlined by Arnett Muldrow and Associates for the town.
A new town logo has been adopted (above), and new welcome signs featuring the logo will be placed at entrances to the town. Material for the construction of the signs has been donated.
Other areas being worked on include securing a DHCD CDBG grant, working with building owners to address vacancies and blight, working with Civitan to complete a walking trail expansion at Grogan Park, and the possibility of a mixed drink referendum on the election ballot.
While the subject of mixed drinks may have a negative connotation with some residents, town officials would like to point out that beer and wine are already available for sale at restaurants and businesses within town limits. Mixed drinks, being far more expensive than those two already available alternatives, are unlikely to lead to alcohol abuse, while at the same time allowing the town to explore the possibility of high-end dining and other businesses.
This chart outlines the
broad steps, and the progress made to date.
This 84 page booklet is a fairly large
download, with extensive details and findings that impact the town's
revitalization efforts, put together by Arnett Muldrow & Associates.
This first video, from Kingsport Times-News, addresses the Mixed Beverage referendum.
